Scaling Discord’s voice on Cloudflare’s edge
Presented by: Jonas Bengtson
Originally aired on October 23 @ 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM EDT
Moving Discord’s voice and video onto Cloudflare took the migration well beyond a typical rollout. This session takes you through that migration. Hear how we were able to hold the reliability bar by partnering directly with Cloudflare’s engineering teams and working down to the kernel level to understand behavior neither team had mapped before. That collaboration led to fixes on both sides of the stack and changes from Cloudflare that carry forward to other customers running similar workloads. Today, Cloudflare carries more than half of Discord’s voice and video traffic, with quality improving in roughly 70% of migrated regions, pings down more than 30%, and packet loss down 20–60% in multiple regions.
