People, devices, and agents: How Rippling’s edge architecture evolved

Rippling’s use of Cloudflare Workers began as a simple multi-region routing layer for people. It evolved into a stateful platform for device management, using Durable Objects and hibernated WebSockets to push commands reliably. Today, Workers powers Rippling’s AI infrastructure, including MCP gateway, third-party MCP governance, and AI policy and budget controls. This talk traces Rippling’s journey from routing people to managing devices and governing agents at the edge.
